How to install & configure Zimbra Desktop (Mac)

Summary

Zimbra Desktop is an offline client that lets you manage multiple email accounts - including your Zimbra account email, contacts, calendar and documents in one easy to manage desktop client. Your Zimbra account, Yahoo! email, Gmail, AOL, Outlook and any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP is easy to set up in Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop. Each account is separately maintained.


Requirements

  • Mac OS X (Intel) Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard 10.5.5 and above
  • At least 200MB free disk space is required to install the software. Additional disk space is required to download mailbox data.

  • At least 512MB free memory is required -- and 1GB or more is recommended to run Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop.


Installation

Download Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop at: http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html or click on the badge below: 



Click on Get Desktop on the Zimbra Desktop home page:



Next, click on the Mac version as the download type:


Zimbra Desktop will begin downloading. Once the download completes, double-click on the zdesktop.dmg installer file:



Double-click on the Zimbra Desktop Installer icon and click 'Open' if prompted:



You will be asked to select a language. Once done, click OK:




The Zimbra Desktop Setup Wizard will appear. Close any open Applications and select Next to proceed:



Accept the License Agreement, then select Next:



You will be prompted to enter your Mac account password. This is the password for your Mac user account found under Macintosh HD > Applications > System Preferences > Accounts. Enter your Mac password, then click OK:



Select a destination to install the Zimbra Desktop application. You may install in the default location or select your own by selecting 'Browse'. When finished, click 'Next' and the Setup Wizard will begin installation of Zimbra Desktop on your computer:



Select the Update Options. Check 'Automatically check for updates' if you would like Zimbra Desktop to automatically check for newer builds of Zimbra Desktop (recommended). You may also check 'Join beta testing network' if you would like receive beta updates of newer Zimbra Desktop releases (not recommended for production environments). Select 'Next' when finished:



Next, choose any additional tasks you would like to configure. You may set the service port (not recommended unless you are certain there is a port conflict). You may also check the box to 'Create a desktop item' if you would like the Zimbra Setup Wizard to install a desktop shortcut to the Zimbra Desktop application. Select 'Next' when finsished:



On the final installer window, check the box to 'Launch Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop' and click 'Finish':



Zimbra Desktop will automatically launch. Click 'Add New Account' to add a new email account to Zimbra Desktop:



Next, enter the account type. Select 'Zimbra' if you are setting up a Zimbra account, or select an account type from the drop-down list:



In the Add New Account window, enter the details of your account. If you are setting up a Zimbra account, use the following settings:

Account Type: Zimbra
Account Name: Your full Zimbra email address
Email Address: Your full Zimbra email address
Password: Your account password
Incoming Mail Server: You will need to enter the specific mail server your Zimbra account is located on for this step. Please contact your System Administrator or submit a ticket for assistance with this step.


Security: Check the box for this option. This should change your Port to 443
Schedule: Select how often Zimbra Desktop will check for new mail in this account (every x minutes, hours, etc.)



Once you have entered your settings, click 'Validate & Save'. The My Accounts screen will confirm your account has been setup. Click 'Add New Account' to add additional email accounts in Zimbra Desktop. Click 'Launch Desktop' when finished:



Once Zimbra Desktop has been launched, it will start downloading your account information from the server. Note that the first sync may take up to several hours to sync, depending on how much information is downloaded to your account.
